The serene community of Naze in Owerri North Local Government of Imo State is already agog in honour of late ex-international, Henry Nwosu, as the town’s former footballers are planning a match as part of his burial activities.
Sports247 gathered that the requiem football match, tagged ‘Clash of Titans,’ will have Naze All Stars play against Imo Football Legends on Easter Sunday, ahead of which several football personalities have promised to be there.
The match, which is organized by Ikuku Oma Foundation, in conjunction with Naze Football Federation, will run from 4pm at Naze Secondary School, with many sons and daughters of the community expected in attendance.
Already confirmed for Naze All Stars are Ikuku Oma, Joe-Ken Nzerem, Ejike Urewuji, Nda Gboko, Oga Ekete, Oga Eshi ke Naze, Chief Agba I and Mmiri The Crown Prince, while Imo Football Legends will have ex-players from across the state.
Organisers of the match said it is their own way of honouring a ‘son of the soil’ from Naze, who contributed immensely towards uplifting the community and promoting unity among the youths by establishing the annual Henry Nwosu Cup.
Consequently, some former players that participated in the competition decided to dust their boots and play the match as their own tribute to the late former Super Eagles star, who established the vastly popular grassroots contest in 1985.
Sports247 gathered further that the competition, which usually holds during the Christmas season, has become a major source of entertainment and unity in Naze, with participants trooping in from the neighbouring communities of Ulakwo, Agbala and Egbu.
One of the organsiers disclosed, “People from all those communities and others normally find their way to Naze over the years to come and watch the matches of Henry Nwosu Cup. The fun it has provided over the years has been inspirational.
“There is also ongoing speculation that Heartland manager and former Super Eagles star, Emmanuel Amuneke, might lead the Imo Football Legends team on Sunday evening when they take on Henry Nwosu’s kinsmen.”
