Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has emphasized that the Super Eagles require stronger, more competitive opponents for friendly matches to properly evaluate the team’s strength and prepare for major tournaments.
He made this known on the backdrop of Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Iran and a 2-2 draw against Jordan in a four-nation tournament that was concluded on Tuesday in Turkey.

In a chat with Brila FM, Lawal argues that playing lower-ranked teams does not adequately prepare the Super Eagles for the challenges of top-tier tournaments, emphasizing that the focus should be on challenging themselves against stronger opponents.
“Using Jordan and Iran as a yardstick to judge your team I don’t think we are serious that’s just the truth, I must confess to you, in any form you can’t compare Jordan to our team.
“Like I keep harming on, our problem is our preparation we have the talent, the players and everything to excel but our preparation is always lackluster I don’t think it’s meaningful why don’t we look for teams that will prepare us for that tax and give us that challenge so when the qualification starts we will be able to measure up.“
