Arsenal could be forced to pick between Gabriel Martinelli and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez this summer due to a major transfer decision from PSG.

The Gunners are gearing up for what is likely to be another busy summer transfer window. Arsenal, likely with at least one major piece of silverware to their name, will be one of the most attractive destinations for players looking to change clubs.

One such player is Atletico Madrid superstar Alvarez, who is frustrated with his club’s lack of competitiveness in LaLiga and the Champions League. The Argentine is Barcelona’s top target to replace Robert Lewandowski, but Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked.

For Arsenal, the need to sign the 26-year-old is not entirely obvious. Although Viktor Gyokeres has struggled to consistently perform at Premier League level, his return of 11 goals (and 16 across all competitions) is respectable if unspectacular.

Replacing the €67 million signing with an even more expensive striker after just one season would be a gamble, especially as Alvarez has not always been at the peak of his powers this season either.

PSG want Alvarez – or Martinelli

Should Arsenal end up signing the Atleti striker, it would likely have to come at the cost of at least one player. That player, though, may not be Gyokeres. It could actually end up being Gabriel Martinelli.

Not only is the Brazilian widely considered one of the prime candidates to be sold and to help Arsenal balance the books after boasting the world’s biggest net spend this season, but he is also considered an alternative to Alvarez by PSG.

Indeed, according to Media Foot, PSG have reignited their well-documented pursuit of the Argentine striker, while Martinelli has been shortlisted as a potential Plan B.

PSG, who are already stacked with attacking options, are planning to sign another high-profile attacker this summer. That is because Goncalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in, Senny Mayulu and Ibrahim Mbaye are all facing uncertain futures and could need replacing.

Alvarez is considered the priority target, as he was in 2024 when PSG tried to sign him from Man City. He previously confirmed that the Ligue 1 giants were in talks to bring him to the French capital.

However, should PSG once again fail to secure his signing, then Martinelli could become one of the top options for Luis Enrique and company. In fact, it is claimed that the Parisians have already enquired about the 24-year-old’s availability.

What’s more, Atletico Madrid have also been strongly linked with a move for the winger in recent days. So, if Arsenal were to end up signing Alvarez, they would likely have to move on from Martinelli.
