Nigeria’s athletics team is gearing up for a crucial outing at the Botswana National Trials scheduled for April 3–5, with a clear objective of strengthening their relay prospects ahead of the World Athletics Relays 2026.

Having already secured qualification in four relay events—the women’s 4x100m, women’s 4x400m, mixed 4x100m, and men’s 4x400m—Team Nigeria will use the Botswana meet as a vital opportunity to sharpen combinations and possibly add more qualification slots.
The trials also serve as a key preparatory ground for the global relay showdown coming up in May.
Under the supervision of Gabriel Okon, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s Technical Director, the team has intensified preparations in camp.
Focus areas include baton exchanges, race execution, and overall team chemistry—critical components that often determine relay success at the highest level.
Host nation Botswana is equally poised to make a strong impression, as the National Championships double as their final selection trials.
Competing on home soil at the National Stadium, Botswana’s athletes will be eager to deliver standout performances in front of their supporters.
Leading the charge is sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, who headlines a formidable men’s 4x400m relay pool alongside Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi.
Their presence adds significant depth and competitiveness to the event, setting up an exciting clash with visiting teams.
Beyond the sprints, middle-distance stars like Tshepiso Masalela and Kemorena Tisang are expected to light up the track, while Same Mohutsiwa and Naledi Monthe will be among those to watch in the women’s events.
According to Oabona Theetso, Acting President of the Botswana Athletics Association, improved scheduling has created an ideal platform for top athletes to compete without clashing with European meets—ensuring a strong field across events.
