Across different eras, several traditional powerhouses have experienced similar downturns, missing out on successive World Cups despite their pedigree and talent pools.
From Europe to Africa and South America, these qualification failures often reflect periods of transition, managerial instability, or fierce competition within confederations. While some nations quickly bounced back to reclaim their status, others endured prolonged absences before returning to the world stage.
In this piece, Complete Sports’ James Agberebi profiles seven top football nations that have, at different times, failed to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups.
ITALY
For the third consecutive FIFA World Cup finals, four-time champions Italy will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Gli Azzurri (The Blues) suffered another World Cup qualification heartbreak after losing to Bosnia and Hezegovina 4-1 on penalty shootout, after regulation and extra-time finished 1-1.
The four-time world champions have endured yet another painful absence from the FIFA World Cup, extending their barren run on the global stage. Despite their rich pedigree, the Azzurri’s recent struggles in the qualification series have seen them miss out on consecutive editions of football’s biggest tournament.
NIGERIA
After years of heartbreak, the Super Eagles eventually qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 1994 in the United States.
After debuting in 1994, the Super Eagles went on to feature at the 1998 and 2002 tournaments but failed to qualify for the 2006 edition.
The Super Eagles bounced back and went on to qualify for the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
But since their last appearance in 2018, the Super Eagles have failed to qualify for the 2022 and 2026 editions.
ENGLAND
The Three Lions’ first appearance at the FIFA World Cup was in 1950, where they crashed out at the group stage.
England then went on to make appearances in five consecutive World Cups – 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970.
Surprisingly, England were knocked out in the qualifiers for the 1974 and 1978 World Cups.
The 1966 champions returned to the world stage as they picked up a ticket for the 1982 tournament and were also present at the 1986 and 1990 competitions.
FRANCE
France have failed to qualify for the World Cup consecutively on two occasions since their first appearance at the inaugural edition in 1930.
The French did not secure qualification for the 1970 tournament and once again missed out in 1974.
After qualifying for the 1978, 1982 and 1986 editions, France missed both the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
Since then, they have not missed any World Cup – 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.
SENEGAL
The Teranga Lions made their World Cup debut at the 2002 tournament, where they reached the quarter-finals.
Unfortunately, Senegal did not qualify for three consecutive World Cups – 2006, 2010 and 2014.
They returned to the World Cup after securing one of Africa’s tickets to the 2018 edition and have also qualified for the 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
NETHERLANDS
The Netherlands first qualified for the World Cup in 1934 and also featured at the 1938 tournament.
Like France, the Dutch also failed to qualify for the World Cup consecutively on two separate occasions. They missed four straight World Cups in 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970.
The 1988 European champions returned to the tournament in 1974 and 1978 but failed to qualify for the 1982 and 1986 editions.
URUGUAY
The first-ever FIFA World Cup champions, Uruguay, also failed to qualify for the tournament consecutively on two occasions.
Uruguay missed out on the 1978 and 1982 World Cups but staged a comeback for the 1986 and 1990 editions.
However, they again failed to qualify for the 1994 and 1998 tournaments and, since finishing fourth in 2010, they have not missed any edition.
