Nigeria is set to break new ground in international wrestling after former federation president Daniel Igali revealed plans for the country to debut in beach wrestling at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.

The announcement marks a significant expansion of Nigeria’s wrestling programme, as the country looks to diversify its presence on the global stage and tap into new opportunities within the sport.
According to Igali, beach wrestling has already been introduced at the ongoing national wrestling championship, a move aimed at familiarising athletes with the discipline and preparing them for international competition.
“This is the next step for us,” he suggested, highlighting the federation’s forward-thinking approach.
The Youth Olympic Games debut will serve as a testing ground for Nigeria, offering young athletes the chance to compete in a relatively new format of the sport. For Igali, it is also part of a broader vision to position Nigeria for future participation at the senior level, including the 2032 Olympic Games.
“We are building towards something bigger,” he explained, emphasizing long-term development rather than immediate results.
