Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has praised Nigerian-born boxer Moses Itauma following his impressive knockout victory over American fighter Jermaine Franklin.
Itauma delivered a stunning performance at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester on Saturday night, stopping the previously unbeaten Franklin in emphatic fashion.
Days before the bout, the 21-year-old had spoken warmly about his recent visit to Akwa Ibom State, where he spent time during the holidays. Itauma, who has roots in Adoroatabong in Eket Local Government Area through his father, described his experience as memorable, highlighting the peace, warmth, hospitality, and strong sense of acceptance he received from the people.
Despite Franklin entering the fight as the overwhelming favourite with an unbeaten record of 27 bouts, Itauma showed no signs of pressure. The British-Nigerian boxer, who came into the fight with a perfect 13-0 record, dominated from the opening round.
His breakthrough moment came in the third round when he knocked Franklin down before finishing the job with a powerful left uppercut followed by a right hand that left the American sprawled on the canvas. Referee Steve Gray quickly stepped in to stop the fight.
Reacting to the victory, Governor Eno expressed delight, describing Itauma as a true ambassador of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria.
“Great, I am delighted to hear this. True Akwa Ibom spirit, true Nigerian ambassador,” the governor said.
The victory takes Itauma’s record to 14 wins from 14 fights, further strengthening his growing reputation as one of the brightest prospects in heavyweight boxing. He is now ranked as a top contender by both the World Boxing Organization and the World Boxing Association.
Speaking after the bout, Itauma admitted he is surprised by how quickly his career is progressing.
“I thought I could win titles, but I didn’t know it would be so soon. I am just a young boy chasing a dream,” he said.
His latest triumph has drawn praise from boxing observers, who continue to highlight his sharp footwork, ring intelligence, and remarkable speed for a heavyweight fighter.
