Amuneke: Players Now Embracing Philosophy, ‘Process’ Paying Off
Emmanuel Amuneke, Technical Manager of Heartland FC, has revealed that his players are increasingly embracing his football philosophy and adapting to the team’s ‘process’, a development he believes underpinned their emphatic 3-0 victory over Gateway United in Saturday’s 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) fixture at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Completesports.com reports.
Emmanuel Charles opened the scoring seven minutes after kick-off, unsettling the visitors early on. Udochukwu Anumudu doubled the Naze Millionaires’ lead in the 38th minute, ensuring the hosts went into the half-time break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
Returnee Francis Erikan added the third goal in the 71st minute as Amuneke’s side wrapped up the contest with a clean sheet — a result that keeps them in third position in the Conference A table with 23 points.
Amuneke: ‘Understanding, Unity Driving Heartland Improved Performances’
Amuneke told reporters after the match that the improved display was largely due to the players’ growing understanding of the team’s philosophy, the ‘process’ he has consistently emphasised, and the impact of new additions to the squad.

“I think that’s part of it, and also it’s not just about the new players,” Amuneke began. “Everything has a process.
“Since the season started, we’ve been trying to build a philosophy in terms of the players being able to express themselves and also understand the game from an intelligence point of view.
“I think football is not just about talent; it takes a lot to understand your teammate and for your teammate to understand you too. Then you can bring that unity together for everyone to function as a unit. So, we’re happy and we hope to continue to progress as a team.”
Heartland Clinical Edge Made The Difference Against Gateway
The two teams had settled for a goalless draw in their first-round clash in Abeokuta. Asked what changed in Saturday’s dominant performance, Amuneke pointed to improved efficiency in front of goal and a different match scenario.
“I think what worked in the first game and what worked today, if you ask me, is the fact that it’s a different scenario and a different environment as regards the two games.
“In the first game in Abeokuta, we played away and had our chances but failed to convert them. Now, the season has progressed significantly, and there have been changes in terms of bringing in different personnel.
“So, I think we have a very clear objective, which is to win our games. I can only congratulate the boys. We’re growing with every game as a team, and that’s what makes a team look good.
“We’re happy we won. We won’t begin to speculate. Gateway United are also a good side, but we were more effective in taking our chances.
“To take all three points, you must be effective in front of goal.”
Amuneke: Focus Remains On Finishing Season Strong
Heartland still have a game in hand — an away fixture against Smart City — leaving them with three matches before the end of the season. Amuneke emphasised that his side will remain focused and approach each game with the right mentality.
“Well, we’re happy that we scored three goals and kept a clean sheet. We also know that we still have three games,” he said.
“Like I’ve always said, we’re not here to make noise. We just want to play our games and approach each one as it comes.
“Every game comes with different challenges. We know all three games will be very difficult, but what matters is our readiness to play them and achieve our objectives.”
