Emmanuel Chukwuma, head coach of FC Bethel Sporting, has expressed satisfaction with his team’s resilience and growth after securing third place at the Jagaban Cup 2026 with a 4–3 penalty shootout victory over Ikorodu City.

The encounter ended 1–1 in regulation time, with FC Bethel initially taking the lead before Ikorodu City responded through Dagogo Obifubara.
The “Oga Boys” had earlier missed a penalty in open play, a moment that proved costly as FC Bethel held their nerve to triumph in the shootout, thanks largely to a standout goalkeeping display by Uche Ugochukwu Stephen.
Reflecting on his team’s journey, Chukwuma admitted their campaign did not start as planned.
“The first match was disappointing for us. We prepared to win but lost,” he said, referencing their narrow 1–0 defeat to eventual group leaders Klassisch Football Academy. “I am happy the team regrouped in the last two matches.”
FC Bethel responded strongly in the group stage, recording victories over defending champions SGFC Athletics and 36 Lions FC to finish second in Group A with six points from three matches.
Despite narrowly missing out on a place in the final, the coach acknowledged the team’s ambition while accepting their eventual position.
“We planned to be in the final, but we are satisfied with third place and will build from here,” he noted.
Chukwuma also addressed concerns about his side’s attacking output, despite their solid defensive structure throughout the tournament.
“We understand that goals bring victory. We’ve worked hard not to concede, but we will improve in the attacking areas,” he assured.
On the decisive shootout, he emphasized preparation and discipline.
“Everything done on the field has been worked on—penalties, set pieces, all of it. The goalkeeper was outstanding, and we are glad to be victorious.”
He concluded by praising the Jagaban Cup as a vital platform for emerging talents.
“This is one of the biggest opportunities for young players in the state and the nation. We hope our players benefit from the scouting program.”
FC Bethel Sporting now turn their focus to upcoming competitions, aiming to build on the lessons and positives from their Jagaban Cup campaign.
