Young Africans (Yanga) impressively demonstrated their ambitions to enter the African continent with a 3-0 away victory over Vilite Angola in a CAF Champions League preliminary match at the Estadio 11 de Novembre in Luanda.
The Tanzanian champions looked like a continental heavyweight, silencing the home fans with their tactical discipline and attacking brilliance.
The breakthrough came in the 31st minute, when Aziz Andabwele curled a superb shot from outside the box past the helpless Vilite goalkeeper. Yanga led 1-0 at halftime, but the game was still not over.
The visitors stepped up their attack in the second half. In the 72nd minute, Edmund John coolly slotted home a precise pass from Maxi Nzengeli to extend their lead. Zimbabwean international Prince Dube, who had previously missed a good chance, redeemed himself with a well-taken shot in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.
Despite the missed chances, Yanga remained undeterred, showcasing their growing experience in African football and securing their place in the next round of the competition, the second leg to be played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on September 27, 2025.
Even more gratifying, the team received 15 million Tanzanian shillings through the “Mommy Goal” initiative, an incentive program launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to encourage Tanzanian clubs to participate in international competitions.
President Samia’s unwavering support for the sport continues to inspire clubs across the country, and Yanga’s victory in Luanda showed that Tanzania is ready to challenge the continent’s elite.
