Michael Oliseh explains why he chose France over Nigeria

Bayern Munich striker Michael Oliseh has explained why he chose to play for France over Nigeria, England and Algeria.

Born in England to a Nigerian father and an Algerian-French mother, Oliseh could have played for Nigeria, Algeria, England or France. Many Nigerian fans had expected him to choose the Super Eagles but now he has clarified why he chose France.

The 22-year-old said his decision was largely influenced by his love for French football legends Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, who were his childhood idols. He also spoke about his connection to France through his mother’s bloodline.

According to the Daily Mail , Olise’s admiration for these football icons played a big role in his decision. The newspaper said: “He ultimately chose France, a decision that can be traced back to his childhood and his mother’s roots in the country.” Speaking to

L’Equipe, Olise said: “I have many different connections with Nigeria, Algeria, France and England. But choosing France was natural for me. I grew up watching French football and admiring players like Zidane and Henry.” He added: “At home, I have parents from three cultures and outside of England, I don’t need to force that mix – it’s there.”

Olise has already made four appearances for France after making his debut against Italy in the UEFA Nations League last September.

He has been in top form since moving to Bayern Munich last summer, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 40 games in all competitions.
